Understanding Galvanization and Oxidation Resistance

  Galvanization is a process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent rusting. When a sheet of metal is galvanized, a layer of zinc forms on its surface. This zinc layer acts as a sacrificial anode, meaning it corrodes before the underlying steel or iron. This sacrificial protection is the primary reason galvanized sheet metal offers excellent oxidation resistance.

  The zinc coating on galvanized sheet metal reacts with oxygen in the air to form a thin, protective layer of zinc oxide. This layer further reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to create a more stable and insoluble layer of zinc carbonate. These layers act as a barrier, preventing oxygen and moisture from reaching the underlying metal and thus slowing down the oxidation process.
